Health Benefits of Golden Melon

As we approach the dry season, you can see the mallams of  (Northern Nigeria)pushing some of the golden melons around.  Do not just pass by.  They are healthy foods loaded with nutrients. Of the many melon types, Golden melons contain the most vibrant taste. From the cultivar’s family of muskmelons, golden melons exist in quite a few varieties such as the Crenshaw, Casaba (coming from Kasaba, an urban area in Turkey), Winter and Persian.

Golden melons or honeydew as it is sometimes called, is among the best choices for a quick bite, particularly for those who have always wanted to live a healthy way of life. Some of its health benefits are stated below:
Zeaxanthin – The light green pigment of the honeydew melon indicates the presence of the carotenoid called zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin is considered to be a powerful antioxidant that can protect your vision by accumulating in the macula area of your eye where it absorbs harmful blue light, as revealed by research.
Golden melon is a good, low-calorie source of potassium. Potassium is a vital electrolyte used by your body to grow and maintain cells, initiate nerve response and contract muscles. The flavour of honeydew melon is subtler. It is a nutritious fruit.

 Here are some  of the important nutrients in honeydew melon:


1. It contains: folic acid – promotes fetal health, making it ideal for pregnant women.
2. Potassium in golden melons helps the heart beat properly.
3. Source of Copper – Copper helps in skin regeneration which leaves your skin shinning and supple.
4. Vitamin C- Improves the immune system and helps keep sicknesses at an arms length.
5. Source of B vitamins- Thiamin and niacin, Thèse are important anti-oxidants that keep your system toxin free.
6. No Carbohydrates and zero cholesterol which means diabetic patients can enjoy it as well.
7. Ideal in a weight loss diet. You can combine it with watermelon for a cool refreshing mini fruit salad since it taste bland and not as sugary as the red watermelon
One of the most interesting facts about golden melon is its non fat, non cholesterol content and its also a low calorie fruits adding to its suitability for diabetics.

I tried mixed sum of it with fresh cucumber one on a sunny day for a client and it was great for that diabetic, cool, refreshing and energizing.  You could give it a try too.  

Golden melon is a raw fruit making it easily absorbed.  Raw foods are great for diabetics too.

Try mixing with cucumber and watermelon for a refreshing fruit salad for your family this season.
