Best Foods for a Healthy Teeth and Gum

Best Food for Healthy gums and teeth by siri dental care

Your teeth and gums are important part of your body,  just like other organs, specific nutrients are required by different parts of your body to enable them perform optimally.  The same applies to the teeth and gum .  Let us look at the various nutrients needed by your teeth and gum and which foods contain them.  It is always better to resort to natural ways in all  our efforts to staying healthy.

Here are the Nutrients needed by your teeth and gum in order to stay healthy:

Calcium rich foods
Foods rich in Vitamin C
Vitamin D rich foods
Probiotics containing foods
Foods high in antioxidants
Foods rich in anthocyanins, polyphenols and arginine
Foods high in Water

With the above at the back of our minds, let us see some foods that are healthy for our teeth and gums

1.  Milk

Yes, milk is being tagged bad these days almost in everything and everyway,  but none will deny the fact that one of the richest and cheapest source of absorb able calcium today is milk, whether dry, liquid and full cream.  They are all good sources of calcium needed by our teeth right from childhood till old age.  The reason I refuse to agree with persons who advise that in the pursuit of  today's wellness theories, we should abandon milk.  Milk is healthy, milk is a biblical food, milk is required by children in higher amount, truly the older we grow the less milk we need, but total abstinence from milk is still a wonder to me.  From where then do we get all the calcium for our teeth and gums.  Other sources of calcium are cheese, yorghut, soyabeans, millet, green foods like moringa etc.

2.  Oranges and Pineapples

These are good sources of vitamin C to help us maintain a healthy teeth and gum

3.  Onions and garlic

These two sulfur containing foods are great for our teeth,  They are best when eaten raw, that is when you need get all the antibacterial and germs fighting nutrients in these foods.  They are possess strong resistance to germs that destroy cavities and cause gum disease.

4.  Sesame Seeds

High in calcium and very efficient at scrubbing plague off your teeth while you chew them

5.  Ginger

Possesses anti inflammatory, antifungal and anti bacterial properties that help fight gum disease.  Additional, it has pain killing properties and helps keep your mouth fresh and free from germs.  It also kills yeast that makes gum disease worse.

6.  Sweet Potatoes

A healthy dose of vitamin A such as found in sweet potatoes will naturally support your gum and enamel.

7.  Black Coffee

A surprise I believe, yes, black coffee is tagged a bad guy by many due to caffeine, but research is showing that black coffee is not bad altogether but may be helpful in keeping your teeth and gum health due to its high antioxidant and bitter taste.  Of course if sweets are bad in the bad list, it obviously means the bitter is sweet to your teeth and gums.

8.  Oranges

Most citrus are acidic which may not be best on contact with your teeth but oranges are the least, and packed with vitamin C needed by your teeth and gums to fight disease.  But your must  take with caution because it contains sugar too.  If taken in excess, the effect may be negative.

9.  Fatty Fish

Most fatty fish, or fish oil is a healthy part of foods that builds strong teeth and gums.  Fatty fish taken at least twice a week will provide some healthy fats and the vitamin D required full absorption of calcium.

10.  Black and Green Tea

These are known for their polyphenols content which help reduce bacteria and toxic products in the mouth.  Teas are good sources of fluoride which is a well known necessity for health teeth and gum.  They work best when taken plain without milk or honey as the addition could affect their benefit.

11.  Nuts

Nuts are full of health benefits for your teeth.  They are packed with plenty of  important elements like calcium and phosphorus.  Notable in the group are almonds, brazil nuts and cashews  which help to fight bacteria that lead to tooth decay.

12 Cranberry and  Strawberies

These two berry fruits are packed full of vitamin C and polyphenols which keeps plague at bay, thus lowering the risk of cavities.  According to nano.b.com.  Fresh cranberries are specially effective at disrupting the process of plague formation.

13.  Carrots

Definitely this low calorie nutrient dense fruit cannot be left out.  It is a storehouse of vitamin A and other nutrients that keeps your teeth strong.  No wonder, some kids start learning to chew by biting on fresh carrots first as their first line of  using the teeth to chew.

14.  Probiotic

Fermented foods occasionally in our diet are a great way to maintain strong teeth and gum.  Some like yorghut, millet pap, locust beans, soyabeans, cassava flour etc.  Too much of fermented foods however may give a negative effect due to the presence live bacteria already existing through the fermentation process.

15.  Apples

Apples are also healthy for your teeth.  They contain vitamin C and some notable acids that help make the teeth white and strong,

Other foods that may benefits your teeth include soy product, Raisin, celery, and plenty of clean water.  It is also important to always brush your teeth each morning with a soft brush and good tooth paste. Avoiding sweets and processed foods is another great way to preserve your teeth and gums.
